Urban Justice: An Introduction
Introduction to the concept of “urban justice” developed in the research project The Just City (PID2020-120021GB-100/MICIN). The project stems from an interest in developing criteria for assessing the quality of life in cities, which is a way of thinking about the quality of cities themselves. A ‘good city’ would be one that allows for a certain type of life and social bonds. The idea of justice, applied to the urban context, relates the “good life” to the physical and social structure of cities. Ultimately, access to urban services and resources translates into people’s ability to develop their personal autonomy and life projects. In the Digital CSIC repository
Public Housing Policies in Madrid. A Review from the the Capabilities Approach
Throughout the twentieth century, housing policies succeeded in reducing Madrid’s housing deficit, but by focusing on the provision of housing rather than the equitable distribution of opportunities, they perpetuated inequalities and exclusion, contributing to the fact that today Madrid is one of the European cities with the highest levels of spatial segregation. This exhibition develops this thesis in three parts: 1. Introduction to the basic concepts of urban justice. 2. Summary of the public housing policies implemented in Madrid. 3. Analysis of these policies from a capabilities approach and their impact on the achievement of urban justice. In the CSIC Digital Repository
